Hello all.

There are different myths about different areas of life that we have come to believe as truths, either taught to us, heard from our aunties and uncles while growing up, or situations that we've had debates on even after becoming adults. One of such areas is based on skin, its ways, and its care.

Certain myths about skincare are believed by a lot of people today. These myths are most times misconstrued truths.

Here are 3 widely believed myths and their truths.

Myth 1

You don't need to use anti-aging products until you are in your thirties. Because you're essentially not old yet and as such cannot be aging.

Truth

You can begin to use anti-aging products and start incorporating them into your everyday routine in your early 20s especially ones with antioxidants. However, it is important you use anti-aging products that are appropriate for your skin type! Anti-aging products provide many benefits to the skin as it ages. The sooner you start using anti-aging products, the less likely you are to develop wrinkles and lines.

Myth 2

Scrubbing your face with soap will get rid of acne.

Truth

Washing the face with soap will cleanse the skin of surface oil, dead cells, and dirt. However, overdoing it puts you at risk of drying out and irritating your skin; eventually, the acne will get worse. Using bar soap can damage the outer protective layer of the skin. This leads to accentuated wrinkles and pores and can cause acne and inflammation, which makes breakouts worse. Next time you wash your face, put down the bar soap and reach for a true facial cleanser instead.

Myth 3

Popping your pimples is the fastest way to get rid of acne.

Truth

By popping your pimples, you're forcing bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells further down into your skin. Doing this will only spread the acne and leave you with scars. If you push some of the contents inside the pimple deeper into the skin, which often happens, you increase inflammation. This can lead to more-noticeable acne. Some people develop acne scars and pain. When you pop pimples yourself, you also run the risk of getting an infection from the bacteria on your hands!
