Do you care for your makeup tools? How often do you do so?

Just recently at a function, a friend walked up to me at the toilet and asked to use my beauty blender and brushes for her makeup.

I obliged because I didn’t see sharing my tools as a threat to my skin as it could be washed clean after use. To my utmost surprise, she dropped the blender unwashed into my makeup purse. As we all know, beauty blenders tend to get dirty really quickly.

After I spoke to her about washing it, she said she didn’t know makeup tools should be washed at all. And she assumed that I’d never used my beauty blender that was why she met it clean.

I had to show her easy steps to cleaning the sponge

  • Get the sponge completely wet under running water or in a jar.
  • Add few drops of cleansing liquid to lather.
  • Thereafter, massage the blending sponge till the product build-up is loosened. Repeat the process until you can confirm that it’s clean.
  • Rinse and air dry properly before storage.

What is unknown to a lot of people is that the build-up of dirt and oil on your makeup brushes is a breeding environment for bacteria growth, which can thereafter cause breakouts or acne.

It is essential to wash your makeup brushes at least once weekly, particularly if the tool is used for liquid-based products, as they are highly susceptible to microbe growth.

If you use the brushes daily, make sure to clean after each use

How then can you clean your brushes?

  • Fill a small jar with water, add a small drop of baby shampoo
  • Dip the tip of your brush into it as you gently swirl your brush back and forth.
  • Continue the process until gunk is removed.
  • Rinse in clean water
  • Leave brushes in a cool place to dry.

Cheers!
